Idris Elba is coming to Showtime in the John Ridley (American Crime) directed Guerrilla.

The premise of the show revolves around a love story set in 1970s London, one of the most politically tense periods of time in the history of the U.K. The couple, which Idris will be one half of, frees a political prisoner, forming an underground radical resistance group, who’s mission is to destroy the Black Power Desk – a special branch of government counter intelligence dedicated to eradicating black activism.

Ridley is set to write most of the episodes in the miniseries and will direct, at least, the first two. Guerrilla is being produced by ABC Signature and Fifty Fathoms, and begins filming in late summer 2016. The show has been contracted for 6 episodes.

When asked to speak about the project and Idris’ attachment, John Ridley said, ““I am both humbled by and impressed with Idris’s passion toward bringing this story to life…I share his commitment for populating the culture with driven and complicated people of color, and believe we have great partners on the producorial level, and with our broadcasters Sky Atlantic and Showtime.”

Showtime president and CEO David Nevins is excited to, “bring a fascinating and unexplored story spearheaded by John and Idris, two major creative talents at the top of their game…Guerilla will surely keep our audience at their edge of their seats.”
