Blue Ivy has won her first BET award at the age of 8 years old. The daughter of Beyoncé and Jay-Z took home the award on Sunday for "Brown Skin Girl," a single also featuring Beyoncé, WizKid and SAINt JHN.
According to CNN, Blue Ivy became the youngest person ever to win a BET award when she won the BET HER Award on Sunday. The other nominees for the BET HER Award included Alicia Keys, Ciara, Lupita Nyong’o, Ester Dean, City Girls and LaLa, Layton Greene, Lizzo and Missy Elliott, as well as Rapsody and PJ Morton.
Beyoncé also took home her own award on Sunday, winning the Humanitarian Award. She shared a message of empowerment in her acceptance speech.
"Your voices are being heard and you're proving to our ancestors that their struggles were not in vain," the artist said. "Now we have one more thing we need to do to walk in our true power and that is to vote. I'm encouraging you to continue to take action. Continue to change and dismantle a racist and unequal system. We have to vote like our life depends on it, because it does."
The award-winning "Brown Skin Girl" was featured on Beyoncé's The Lion King: The Gift album. And the song had already won several accolades before the BET award. According to E!, the song earned the Ashford & Simpson Songwriter's Award at the 2019 BET Soul Train Awards as well as Outstanding Duo, Group or Collaboration at the 2020 NAACP Image Awards.
"Brown Skin Girl" debuted at No. 76 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 2019. In the same year, Blue Ivy appeared in her mother's Homecoming documentary on Netflix, which gave viewers a behind-the-scenes look at Beyoncé's 2018 Coachella performance. The 8-year-old made her appearance when she sang "Lift Every Voice and Sing," and the song was subsequently featured on Beyoncé's Homecoming album.
Blue Ivy continued to show off her talents when she briefly freestyled on Jay-Z's 4:44 album. Meanwhile, Beyoncé is staying busy. According to Us Weekly, the grammy-winning artist dropped a trailer for Black Is King on Saturday. The visual album, which features Blue Ivy and Jay-Z, as well as former Destiny’s Child member Kelly Rowland, is expected to premiere on Disney+ on July 31.
"Black Is King is a celebratory memoir for the world on the Black experience,” the producers said in a statement. “The film is a story for the ages that informs and rebuilds the present. A reunion of cultures and shared generational beliefs. A story of how the people left most broken have an extraordinary gift and a purposeful future.”
