Bernie Sanders failed to address concerns from Black Lives Matter protesters at the Netroots Nation conference and decided to instead to talk over them. A widespread critique from #BlackTwitter soon followed.

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Roderick Morrow of the podcast “Black Guy Who Tips” discusses how the #BernieSoBlack hashtag came to be. Morrow felt that Sanders supporters who were upset about his criticism of the candidate’s dismissal of protesters were “scolding” him, saying that Sanders “was blacker than [him].”

Then #BernieSoBlack was born.
