After Maurice Granton Jr. was shot on June 6, the Chicago Police Department claimed he shot at them first, but newly released body cam footage is challenging that account.

The footage was released by Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) on Wednesday, July 25, two weeks before the 60-day deadline, according to the Chicago Tribune.

In the video, 24-year-old Granton runs across a vacant lot and tries to climb a fence to escape the police officers. As the officer wearing the camera raises his weapon, Granton falls off the fence and squirms on the ground in pain. A coroner later determined he had been shot in the back. COPA documents say officer Sheldon Thrasher, a black man, shot Granton.

As witnesses began to gather and shout Granton’s name, Thrasher responded, “He woke.”

Thrasher was later heard encouraging Granton to stay conscious.

Before the footage was released, the Chicago Police Department claimed officers were chasing Granton, and when they ordered him to stop, he pulled a gun and the officer opened fire. Thrasher and another officer were placed on a mandatory 30-day leave after the shooting and have returned to active duty.

The shooting is still under investigation.

Granton’s family has always been skeptical of the department’s story.

"I didn't see any blood or anything on the front of him. I wasn't able to see the back because he was laying, of course, on his back. There was no blood stains, anything, on the front," his sister, Joanna Varnado said, according to ABC 7.

Tayshia Shaw, the mother of Granton’s two daughters, said their children heavily influenced his decision-making.

“He didn’t have no gun on him. He has two kids to live for, so he wouldn’t do anything dumb. He come home to his kids every night,” she said. “That’s not his personality. He wouldn’t even chance his life doing that, knowing he has two very young kids to come home to.”

Now that the footage has been released, Granton’s family is demanding accountability.

Granton’s father, Maurice Sr., said his son was “left on the ground like an animal.”

“I’m just seeking justice,” he told reporters on Wednesday. “It was a coldblooded murder.”
