Life can be tiring when you’re trying to be great.  Overworking is an American characteristic that’s simply a part of cultural identity. Our society, which is based on individualism, has trained us to believe that working hard and extensively is how to succeed. People can debate the characteristics of our culture, but it’s incontestable that we become exhausted and tend to forget about our well-being. What happens as a result? Our weekends off are spent sleeping, chugging a case of beer or wine at home, and watching Netflix.       

Although extreme downtime is totally necessary sometimes, it can be easy to fall into the trap of thinking that it’s the only way to relax. There are so many ways to take time for yourself that also stimulate the mind and can make you better for the upcoming work week. This weekend, put the case of pale ale back and try one of these activities for some invigorating rejuvenation.  

1. Write

Regardless of your profession or interests, writing is key. If you don’t already have one, get a journal or small notebook and start documenting your life. It’ll show you parts of yourself that you didn’t know existed, and it might make some aspects of life a bit clearer.

2. Workout

There’s no real secret to this one. Working out helps in just about every aspect of your health, from mental to physical. Going for a run on the weekend gives you a chance to explore your city when you’re not bustling to the next meeting or interview. Plan a new route and grab a friend to join you. Plus, fall is one of the best times to enjoy outside runs. Make use of the season!      

3. Spend time with someone new  

We all get busy as we get older. Seeing old friends might not be as simple as walking to the dorm next door. Go to a happy hour with that coworker that likes the same music as you do. Grab a cup of coffee with that good-looking guy/girl from your pilates class. Meeting new people makes way for new insight and new perspectives.              

4. Go to a museum/opening/art show  

Many museums have free hours on the weekends or discounted prices for student or government workers. Take advantage of these opportunities and check out a new exhibit in your town.   

5. Pamper yourself 

Whether it’s going to a nail shop, sitting in bubble bath or getting a massage, find what makes you relax most and spend the money. Trust me, you’ve earned it.
