Update (February 5, 2019): The Cook County Sheriff’s Office has released video from the night of Jemel Roberson’s death.

Footage from cellphone videos and police body cameras depicts a chaotic scene before and after Roberson’s death. The Chicago Tribune compiled all of the footage into one clip.

The cameras did not catch Midlothian police officer Ian Covey shooting and killing Roberson. However, viewers are able to see a fight between patrons at Manny’s Blue Room nightclub. A CCTV camera also filmed a patron firing a few shots into the packed club before he was subdued by Roberson.

The video then cuts to the immediate aftermath of Roberson’s death. Several men were seen lashing out at officers with Roberson’s lifeless body a few feet away.

“Your man shot my man. The police shot security. That’s what happened,” an emotional witness said. Others are heard cursing and accusing Covey of being a racist.

Moments later, a security guard who was working with Roberson explained the situation to an officer who arrived after Covey shot Roberson.

“I’m telling [Covey], he workin’ with us, cool out. He’s working with us,” the security guard said. “[Covey] shot him. Four or five times. After we told him he’s with us. Did he not see us with vests on, bro? Why would I have a vest on, bro? This ain’t for fun.”

One man recognized Covey from previous encounters, according to CBS Chicago.

“He done wrote me six or seven tickets,” the man says.

No arrests have been made yet in connection to Roberson’s death.

Original: The name of Jemel Roberson’s shooter has been revealed as part of the wrongful-death lawsuit filed against the officer by Roberson’s mother. With the name comes a personal history where the Midlothian Police Officer Ian Covey was revealed to be a four-year veteran with training designed to de-escalate an active shooter situation, the Chicago Sun-Times reported

As previously covered by Blavity, Roberson was working as a security guard at Manny’s Blue Room when a gunman opened fire around 4 a.m. Eyewitness accounts described Roberson’s efforts to defuse the situation by attempting to stop one of the men who seemed to be involved in the assault. However, upon arrival to the scene, officer Ian Covey shot the 26-year-old guard.

“Everybody is screaming out, ‘He’s a security guard,’” witness Adam Harris told WGN-TV. “And they still did their job, and saw a Black Man with a gun, and basically killed him.”

Roberson would later be pronounced dead at a nearby hospital while the shooter sustained no life-threatening injuries. Meanwhile, Covey has been on paid administrative leave since Nov. 11, CBS Chicago reported.

Now, Roberson’s mother is seeking $1 million in damages.
