Two fliers were posted at an apartment complex in Irvine, California ordering black residents to keep their volume down. Reported by CBS, The fliers say, “We also would like to remind our African-American residents to keep conversation volume down and reduce music levels between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. Multiple complaints have been made regarding this issue.” The fliers also had the logo of the property management company, Equity Residential.
In an interview with CBS, one resident, a college student at the University of California – Irvine, told reporters, “It’s all said to push us out. To make us not feel comfortable and not feel safe in this space so that we can leave.” The student also said that she and her roommates received three noise complaints despite the fact that there was no music playing in their apartment.
Equity Residential claimed in a statement that flier was not authorized by any of their employees, and that “they are disturbed by the content and currently investigating this.”
The Irvine Police Department is also investigating the situation further.
