South Africans are demanding justice after a 7-year-old girl was raped while out with her family.
The girl was attacked on Saturday while she used the restroom in a family restaurant in Pretoria, reports The Independent. A 20-year-old man followed her into the women’s room, grabbed her and took her to the men’s room. He was discovered when the mother heard voices coming from the men's bathroom.
The man was arrested at the scene. He was charged with rape and drug possession.
This is the second highly-publicized assault in a week. The first came when a man attacked a 17-year-old woman in a hospital a few hours after she had given birth.
"On Tuesday‚ a man came posing as a doctor. He asked her how she was doing following the birthing experience," police spokesman Captain Dineo Koena said. "She complained of heavy bleeding and he said he would check up on her. He then ordered her to undress and then he raped her.”
A 30-year-old man was arrested for the assault.
In August, a 23-year-old college student committed suicide two months after she reported another student raped her, according to 9News.
South Africa has one of the highest rates of sexual assault in the world. According to a study by the national statistical service of South Africa, 138 out of every 100,000 women in South Africa were raped between 2016 and 2017.
Africa Check documented 40,035 rape cases between 2017 and 2018, up from 39,828 the previous year. That translates to 110 assaults per day.
Activist Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane urged parents to keep an eye on their children.
“May I plead with our communities, particularly parents, let’s make sure that our children don’t disappear in our view for more than five minutes because we have animals that prey on young children and women in this country,” she said.
Many expressed their outrage on Twitter.
South Africa has become a living horror movie. Abuse, rape and murder has become a thing of a trending culture. It is painful, it is horrific and it is a terrible atmosphere for new and forthcoming generations to be born into. SA is a dangerous place to raise a female child in. https://t.co/dBfPTH6pWn

South Africa needs to reintroduce the death penalty for rapists & peadophiles like #NicholasNinow. We cannot be the rape capital of the world and not take extreme measures to fix it.

The justice system is South Africa is too lenient towards inhuman crimes. Rape, Trafficking, child abuse and murders should be taken with greater punishment

A 20 year old guy raped a 7 year old little girl at a restaurant, inside the bathroom cubicle.
The other day some guy raped a lady that had just given birth, in the maternity ward.
I have goosebumps. My heart is breaking.
