Just when we thought we couldn't love Senator Harris more than we already do, she drops an amazing playlist in honor of African-American Music Appreciation Month, that is quite untouchable.
U.S. Senator Kamala D. Harris shared her Spotify playlist with us at Blavity, and we're excited to bring y'all these amazing vibes. The playlist includes some of her favorite African-American artists that encompass a wide range of genres: RnB, jazz, gospel, hip-hop, rap, soul, pop, reggae, and funk, and did we mention, it's really, really good.
The playlist features nearly 50 songs from classic artists like Marvin Gaye, The Jackson 5, and Nina Simone, while also featuring young and innovative talent such as SZA, Chance, and even Migos, yes you read that right, Senator Harris listens to Migos. Senator Harris has spoken about her love for hip-hop in the past, and definitely didn't shy away from including it in her celebration of African-American music. Naturally, as Senator of California, she made sure to also include some classic west coast musicians like E-40, and Pac. The playlist covers the breadth and depth of black music in America and it will continue to expand until the month comes to a close.
When asked about why celebrating African-American music is integral to celebrating the black experience, Senator Harris said the following:
“Our nation has an indelible soundtrack, songs that have become anthems recognized across the world. Much of that soundtrack is inspired and informed by the vast contributions of African-American artists in jazz, R&B, rap, hip-hop, and beyond."
"No matter where you are from or what you look like, music is a bond that can bring us all together. To celebrate African-American music is to dance, sing, and even march to the rhythms that have long served as vehicles for honesty, inspiration, struggle, success and joy.”
This playlist will definitely be on repeat the rest of the summer, to remind us to keep shining, celebrating and thriving. Happy African-American Music Month!
