President Donald Trump's supporters are bending over backward to defend him against a possible tape of him saying "n****r."

Georgia Sen. Michaels Williams did his best defending Trump during an appearance on CNN Newsday on Saturday, August 18. He believes if Trump said the slur in the past, he should be forgiven.

"It would matter [to me] as an individual. It would not necessarily matter to me as the person that is running our country,” he said.

Former White House staffer Omarosa Manigault Newman has the Trump administration shook after claiming to have recorded an estimated 200 tapes of meetings and interactions in the administration, reports The New York Times. In one of the recordings — at least one — the president can reportedly be heard saying "n****r."

"He has his personal beliefs, his personal ideas. I truly believe he is able to separate those from how he is running the country," Williams added as CNN's Victor Blackwell looked on in confusion.

There was a moment where the two went back-and-forth so that Blackwell could understand what Williams meant by his defense. However, Williams continued to stumble.

“I don't have a problem with Donald Trump having used it in the past as my president. I always say using the N-word is wrong and is bad and should never be accepted in our society. But just because he might have done it years ago, not as our president, doesn't mean we need to continue to berate him because he used it,” Willams said.

This latest incident adds fuel to Manigault Newman's claims made in her book Unhinged: An Insider's Account of the Trump White House regarding the administration's failings when it comes to historically black colleges and universities.

Education secretary Betsy DeVos is accused of not believing black students are capable of understanding her policies. Not only does the Trump administration know how to handle racial issues, but this may also be an issue with Trump's base.
