A Georgia teen who knocked at the wrong apartment door, believing the similar looking unit was his own, lost his life after an enraged man fired upon him.

The victim, 19-year-old Omarian Banks, was killed early Friday morning in an Atlanta-area apartment complex. According to WSB TV, Banks was dropped off by his Lyft around 12:30 a.m. at the wrong breezeway moments before the shooting. He was reportedly unfamiliar with the area; Banks and his girlfriend had just moved in.

Police said the teen was speaking to his girlfriend on FaceTime while he knocked on the wrong apartment door. After receiving no answer, he left the unit and went down the stairwell.

"That’s when he called me and said ‘open the door.’ And that was the last conversation we had,” Zsakeria Mathis, Banks' girlfriend, told Channel 2 Action News.

At that point, the shooter, 32-year-old Darryl Bynes, went to his balcony and confronted the teen. He told officers he shot at the 19-year-old in self-defense, but evidence proved that was false. They reportedly exchanged words before Bynes grabbed a gun and fired. The sounds of gunshots could be heard over the phone.

“I just hear faint voices and a gunshot, and then I hear him yell," Mathis told the station. "And I heard all the fear in his voice and he was just, 'I’m sorry! I’m at the wrong door!’ The man was like, 'No, you’re not at the wrong door!’ And he shot two more times and then it was silent.”

Distraught, Banks' lover went to his side. She ran down the stairs of her building and tended to the teen in the parking lot.

"I turned him over," Mathis said. "He was moaning and groaning and he had tears in his eyes and he was just bleeding."

Banks' mother, Lisa Johnson, said this act was a senseless killing. ABC News reports the teen spent time with Johnson before the shooting.

"It's no joke. You could be here today and gone tomorrow," Johnson told Channel 2. "Stop and think before you pull the trigger."

Authorities apprehended Bynes, and he was charged with murder for the killing. However, Bynes' family members are pleading with authorities to show mercy. They claim he was protecting his family who were victims of a robbery days before the shooting.
