Six women and three men were murdered. None of the victims has yet been named by police, but State House Minority leader Todd Rutherford told the Associated Press that the church’s pastor, state Sen. Clementa Pinckney, was one of the victims.
During the massacre the survivors son pleaded with him to stop at which the shooter reportedly stated: “I have to do it. You rape our women and you’re taking over our country. And you have to go.’” (see video below)
The shooter, Dylann Storm Roof, has been arrested in Shelby, NC. He was arrested in March 2015 on drug charges and in April 2015 on a trespassing charge
U.S. Justice Department has opened a civil rights investigation into the shooting
