Awards season continued on in high gear with the SAG Awards Ceremony Sunday night. The Screen Actors Guild Awards is positioned in between the Golden Globes, which happened earlier this month, and the Academy Awards, which take place next month.

All in all, Fences got two awards and Hidden Figures and Moonlight netted one each.

Kerry Washington opened the awards ceremony, tackling the issue of actors making political statements, saying, "actors are activists no matter what because we embody the work and humanity of all people."

Viola Davis won Female Actor in a Support Role for Fences. In her acceptance speech, she gave credit to August Wilson, the playwright behind Fences in an amazing speech.

Mahershala Ali won Male Actor in a Support Role for Moonlight. He gave a powerful speech on acceptance and tolerance in the United States, telling an anecdote on how the bond between he and his Christian minister mother only strengthened after he told her about his conversion to Islam.

He said, "My mother is an ordained minister. I am a Muslim. She didn’t do backflips when I called her and told her I converted 17 years ago,” he explained. “But we put things to the side and I was able to see her. She is able to see me. We love each other. The love has grown, and that stuff’s minutia. It’s not that important."

The cast of Stranger Things had an epic upset as they won Best Ensemble in Drama Series. This capped off what must have been a terrific week for Caleb McLaughlin, who won this award on top of a record-breaking, well-received premiere for The New Edition Story, which he also starred in.

His cast member, David Harbour, also have a shade-filled speech about turmoil in the U.S., and the responsibility of actors.

Denzel Washington won Male Actor in a Lead Role for Fences, after being snubbed at the Golden Globes.

The cast of Hidden Figures won Best Ensemble in a Movie, with Taraji P. Henson giving an empowering speech as well on the powerful women on which the film was based.

One more stop, and it's the Academy Awards. Let's hope melanin continues to rack up awards come February.
