The Quad is almost back! The HBCU drama, led by Tony Award winners Anika Noni Rose and Ruben Santiago-Hudson, has students and faculty heading back to Georgia A&M University (GAMU).
Peyton Alex Smith, Jazz Raycole, Zoe Renee, Jake Allyn, Michelle DeFraites and Sean Blakemore also star in the BET series.
After last season’s dramatic season finale, there are a many unanswered questions left — from the future of the university to what’s next in the lives of the assortment of characters.
Here’s are some things we are thinking about as Season 2 looms:
1. Will GAMU lose its independence?
One main question going into Season 2 is will the historically-black college remain independent, or will it be forced to join a predominantly-white state university system. If this were to happen, would GAMU ever be the same?
2. What will Sydney do in the aftermath of her sexual assault?
When we last saw her, Sydney (Jazz Raycole) was back in her dorm on campus for the first time since her sexual assault? Heading into Season 2, she’ll definitely continue facing her recovery head on. Now that Terrence Berry (Kevin Savage) has taken his own life, is this over for her, or is it just beginning?
3. What is Clive Taylor up to?
RonReaco Lee has joined Season 2 of The Quad, reprising his role as rival band director, Clive Taylor. What will he have up his sleeve? Is there a possibility that he may actually end up with GAMU? What will be his dynamic with Cecil (Ruben Santiago-Hudson)?
4. What will become of Eva and “Six Pack”?
At the end of last season, Jason (Redaric Williams), also known as “Six Pack,” was trying to make things pretty official with Eva. However, it would be an understatement if we said she wasn’t feeling that proposal at all. With them seemingly going their separate ways, we have to wonder if their relationship will still be lingering, if only just a little bit, in Season 2.
5. Will GAMU ever return to normalcy?
Just before the death of Terrence, it actually seemed as if GAMU was a close to normal as we would see during Season 1. However, considering the events that took place at the end of Season 2, it looks like GAMU will be as interesting as ever. Is it possible to see stability this semester?
6. How will BoJohn fit into the starting quarterback role?
He arguably led the team most of the season anyway, but this season BoJohn (Jake Allyn) will officially situate himself into the role of starting quarterback after Berry’s death. You think he may have it all together after essentially making strides for the team that led them to the championship win, but does he really?
7. How will the upcoming season impact Coach Hardwick?
Hardwick (Sean Blakemore) will definitely be dealing with the death of his star quarterback heading into this season. Berry took his life not longer after their heated conversation and dismissal from the football team. Personal and professionally, this will be something that will guide his life heading into the new semester at GAMU.
8. Will Cecil beat cancer?
Possibly one of the biggest questions marks we were left with is the status of Cecil’s cancer diagnosis. Whatever his diagnosis is, it will be interesting to see how this will impact his involvement with the band.
9. What are Debbi Morgan and Big Boi’s roles?
Debbi Morgan of All My Children fame and Rapper Big Boi of Outkast are also joining The Quad for Season 2. While we don’t know many details about their characters, we hope that Morgan has a role that will put her head-to-head (or at least in some great scenes) with Anika Noni Rose’s Eva, and Big Boi’s character will add some intrigue to the storylines.
10. Will the show explore more HBCU traditions in Season 2?
Season 1 took a heavy dive into how band and football both play such a huge role at HBCUs. We can’t wait to see what happens next season as the show will continue to take the representation of HBCUs to new heights.
Season 2 of The Quad will premiere Tuesday, Jan. 23rd at 10/9c on BET.
