Spelman College is making history for the fourth time as its 2023 graduating class will have four valedictorians. Spelman posted written bios for each grad describing their unique upbringings and post-grad plans. Spelman’s four valedictorians, Maya Blasingame, Amaia Calhoun, Sydney DuPree and Chandler Nutall, succeeded in everything they did on campus.

Blasingame is graduating with a degree in biology and is on a premedical journey. She is a member of the Ethel Waddell Githii Honors Program, Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society and Tri-Beta Biological Honors Society. Blasingame will attend medical school in a few months.

“I feel just really excited and grateful,” Blasingame told 11 Alive. “I think for me, coming in as a biology major, I was like, I’m just trying to make it through it.”

Calhoun is graduating with a degree in economics with a double minor in Spanish and management and organization. This fall, she heads to Princeton University’s Investment Company to work as an investment analyst.

Nutal can now hang her bachelor’s degree next to her George Washington University associate degree. Balancing multiple roles, she is also an Ethel Waddell Githii Honors Scholar, a Spelman Social Justice Program Fellow and serves as the 81st president of the Spelman Student Government Association. After graduating from Spelman, Nutall will move to New York for a public affairs fellowship before embarking on her final goal of pursuing a Juris Doctor degree.

DuPree holds a 4.0 GPA and is a member of the Delta Lambda Honors Society and the executive board of the Brains With Beauty Project. DuPree works with the nonprofit education and empowerment organization started by Spelman alumna and 2022 valedictorian Nailah Barnes that equips Black girls and young women with tools to accentuate their innate brilliance and beauty. She is currently signed with Atlanta’s Forward Agency and would like to use her experience in acting to become a casting director.

Maya Phillips is the salutatorian who will be receiving her degree in sociology. Phillips has been an example of Black excellence as a 2023 Women of Excellence in Leadership program graduate. Phi Beta Kappa’s Epsilon of Georgia chapter recently inducted her, and Phillips’ career plans include working as a strategy analyst at Deloitte Consulting.
