A 7-year-old girl refused to let her shoe stop her chances of winning a race. Talaya Crawford made spectators’ jaws drop on Saturday at an Omaha, Nebraska, track meet after losing her shoe and going on to win the race.
The 7-year-old’s father, notable boxer Terence “Bud” Crawford, recorded the moment and posted it on Instagram, the New York Post reports. The video shows his daughter losing her shoe and sprinting back to get the footwear. She put the shoe back on and went into beast mode, not only catching up with her competitors but also outrunning them.
Bud shared how proud he was of his daughter in the post’s caption.
“I just can’t stop thinking about my daughters track meet yesterday,” he wrote. “She just doesn’t have a clue how much she just motivated me. This is the definition of not giving [up], heart and grit. She let it all hang out even when she was hit with adversity.”
The clip was also shared on Twitter, where it has garnered almost 10 million views.
Viewers were touched by the video and inspired to take Talaya’s resilience as an invaluable life lesson.
“Her actions are a great reflection on how to live – never give up; never stop trying your best – even when there are hindrances or unexpected hiccups,” one user wrote.
“Incredible that she went BACK and put it on,” another added. “You would expect her to maybe just keep running but at age 7 you have no idea what they will do! I’d be proud of her too. What heart. Kids can sometimes be incredibly inspiring without even trying.”
According to the Omaha World-Herald, Talaya has been running with the Apollo Track Club of Omaha for about two years.
Despite still winning the race, her coach Shunta Paul said that Talaya wasn’t pleased with her performance.
Paul said that when she congratulated the sprinter at the finish line, Talaya was “embarrassed” about the slip-up, and yelled when she lost her shoe to try and get officials to stop the race.
“She was just being a kid,” she said. “That’s Talaya. She hates to lose.”
Paul said that Talaya’s win not only taught her an important lesson, but those around her, too.
“It teaches you to never give up,” she said. “To me, this just speaks volumes never to give up. To adults as well, not just for kids.”
