A Houston woman has gone viral after sharing a video of a heartwarming moment with her grandmother. In the video she posted on Instagram, Renee J. Smith shows the joy her grandmother experienced after getting her hair done for the first time in six years.

The grandmother appears perplexed at first, feeling apprehensive about whatever Smith is planning to do to her hair. But Smith apparently knew exactly what she was doing when she gave her grandmother a braided hairstyle.

“I finally did it!!!!!! It’s been over 6 years since my Grandmother has had a real hairstyle,” Smith wrote on Instagram. “My Grandmother had long beautiful golden hair. It was strong and healthy, but after getting older, taking medication and hormonal changes, it all fell out.”

Smith appeared poised as she styled her grandmother’s hair, but she was unable to control her emotions off camera.

“I privately cried after this, because doing this style brought back so many memories. I can’t believe she allowed me to finish without complaining about pain. God is good,” the Houston woman wrote. “I think she looks absolutely beautiful. She actually had a couple of choice words to say because she thought I was going to leave her hair with twigs but the end result is beautiful.”

Smith’s grandmother showed off a bright smile when she saw the final result.

“Look at her face. Her madness went to smiles,” the elated granddaughter wrote. “No more Afros! We’re about to have some fun!”

In another post days later, Smith said her grandmother had to be rushed to the hospital with a low heart rate.

“They thought they would have to put a pacemaker in, but because of her dementia that changed quickly,” Smith wrote. “She started to act out and could not remember where she was. This was the first time I saw her in rare form. She was eventually moved to ICU and had to be heavily sedated. I called on God like never before and I knew he would show up.”

After the woman’s heart rate increased, doctors allowed for her to be discharged and monitored her from home.

“My Grandmother taught me almost everything I know,” Smith wrote. “My desire to be a great wife came from her. She and my Grandfather were married 65 years. He left us last August and unfortunately Mama has not been the same. She was an excellent wife and he was an excellent husband. I’m almost positive she’s suffering from a broken heart, which is something only God can heal.”
