Former Rhode Island Governor Lincoln Chafee has filed to run for president as a Libertarian after failing to capture the Democratic nomination in 2016.
Chaffetz filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission — which created the Lincoln Chafee for President campaign committee on Sunday.
Chafee spent much of his life as a Republican, starting in politics after his appointment to his late father's Senate seat in 1999, and then going on to win his own election in 2000. He lost the seat to Sheldon Whitehouse in 2006 before going on to serve as Rhode Island's governor where, during his term, he announced a party change to Democrat.
According to a report by the Boston Globe, Chafee attended a quarterly meeting of the Libertarian National Committee in November where he became a "lifetime membership" level donor — which the Libertarian Party website lists as a donation of at least $1,500.
His previous attempt at a presidential campaign was largely unsuccessful and Chafee dropped out early from the race with bad polling and fundraising numbers. A CNN report listed he raised $30,000 from June to October — for comparison in this election cycle, in a similar time frame, Sen. Bernie Sanders raised $34.5 million.
"As you know, I have been campaigning on a platform of Prosperity Through Peace," Chafee said while announcing the end of his campaign in October 2015, according to CNN. "But after much thought I have decided to end my campaign for president today. I would like to take this opportunity one last time to advocate for a chance be given to peace."
A campaign website for Chafee has been placed using the slogans "Lincoln Leads with TRUTH" along with the phrase "Thirty Years, Zero Scandals."
