It may not be widely-known that director Andrew Dosunmu is also a celebrated fashion photographer who began his career in the business, working as a design assistant in the couture department for Yves Saint Laurent in Paris. He has worked as creative director and stylist for print ads, magazine editorial and album covers for several artists, and has also directed a few music videos.
If you live in New York City, or will be in the area from today, April 16, through May 6, 2014, you can consume Andrew’s photography work in person at his first solo exhibition at Hotel Particulier, 4 / 6 grand avenue, between Varick & 6th avenue.
Titled “ANDREW DOSUNMU: ELSEWHERE – 10 years of photography,” the exhibition is curated by Béatrice Dupire, and will include 10 large format photographs selected from over 10 years of personal and commissioned work.

Each large format photographs stand by itself, a bold tribute to the profound, intense and yet extremely stylish work. A dignified statement, homage to each truly individual and anonymous, and caught by Andrew Dosunmu with conscientiousness and momentum. “Dare to catch me” could be the rhythm of this poetical journey; real life and narrative, where each character dare the photographer, and us, the viewer, to catch him or her before disappearance or escapism. With their masks, hood, sunglasses or mirror – all real life accessories to twist the reality, and “play” the appearance – Andrew Dosunmu’s heroes, like in his movies, are beautiful in the light, and amazingly desirable.
Dosunmu previously participated in the photography exhibition “Snap Judgments: New Positions in Contemporary Photography” at the International Center of Photography, curated by Okwui Enwezor, in 2006.
Despite its name, Hotel Particulier is not an actual hotel. It’s a space for curated artistic exhibitions, located in a former loading dock in Soho / Hudson Square, in New York City.

Hôtel Particulier, in French contexts, refers to a townhouse or any other building seeing frequent visitors, rather than a place offering accommodation. We exhibit and sell contemporary art, editions, artists multiples, fashion editions. We also have artists in residence developing close collaborations, contributing to their career and to the culture of Hotel Particulier through special projects. Additionally, we have an hospitality component with a salon-café open to the public during the day and hosting curated dinners and events by reservation
