At least eight people were killed in a deadly school shooting on Friday morning (May 18) in Santa Fe, Texas, The New York Times reported. Law enforcement officials have revealed that a suspect is in custody.

A gunman opened fire inside Santa Fe High School around 7:45 a.m., The Times reported. A male suspect, believed to be a student, is in police custody, and a person of interest, also believed to be a student, has also been detained.

Authorities revealed that at least 12 people from Santa Fe High School are being treated at a hospital. Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez confirmed that most of the deaths were students. 

Santa Fe High School student Dakota Scrader told Click2Houston that she was sitting in class when she heard "really loud booms."

"I was sitting in my classroom and I heard really loud booms, but I really didn't know what they were at first," she said. "Then, I realized what they were when I heard screaming.”

According to CNN, Friday's shooting is the third reported school shooting in the U.S. in the eight days. We will continue to provide updates as more information is released.
