Sony continues to invest in their own Marvel universe of Spider-Man heroes and villains while still allowing their Spider-Man to appear in official Disney MCU films.

Now, Latin Grammy winner and platinum-selling recording artist Bad Bunny is getting his own standalone film as Spider-Man character El Muerto.

The news came during Sony’s panel at CinemaCon, where Bad Bunny made a surprise appearance for the announcement.

As Deadline reports, El Muerto is a super-powered wrestler who fought Spider-Man in a charity wrestling match where he almost unmasked the hero before Spidey came out on top. He teams up with Spider-Man after his nemesis El Dorado comes back to life to kill him.

Bad Bunny’s El Muerto would mark the first Latix superhero to get his own film in the universe of Marvel characters. Sony recently gave a release date for Madame Web starring Dakota Johnson and Sydney Sweeney, which marks the first female character from the Spider-Man universe to get her own film.

More details:

The character isn’t the most popular, but it looks like Sony is looking to capitalize on its star’s continued rise in film and TV. Bad Bunny recently played a significant role in Netflix’s Narcos and is set to appear in Bullet Train opposite Brad Pitt and Brian Tyree Henry, which comes out on July 29. Bad Bunny is also seemingly perfect for the role since he has made several appearances in wrestling in the WWE, including a crazy match in Wrestlemania.

Reportedly, Bunny had a strong say in what Latin character he would like to bring to life and impressed Sony, who loved the idea of him playing El Muerto in their Spider-Man universe.

Sony’s Morbius starring Jared Leto was the latest Spider-Man character to get its own movie and was not received well by critics or audiences, so let’s hope Bad Bunny’s film trends the opposite way.
