In traditional racist fashion, an individual anonymously threatened Charleston-area South Carolina Rep. Wendell Gilliard and called him the N-word via email after Gilliard expressed his support to remove Confederate monuments.

In the email, the individual suggested Gilliard should "go back home to Africa" if he doesn't like the Confederate flag and monuments.

According to ABC News 4, the sender used the pseudonym "John Calhoun" with the email address "[email protected]" and threatened that he and his group will pay Gilliard a visit at his house. "We wear suits. No sheet. How about 3AM?" The source of the email is still under investigation.

The threat included a graphic of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee in front of a Confederate flag.

"It really jumped out at me, because I take these things seriously," Gilliard told WCIV-TV. Gilliard said this is not the first time he has been threatened as a lawmaker, but this is the first time he has been contacted personally via email.

A Charleston native, Gilliard said the threats don't intimidate him and he'll continue to do what he feels is right.

"I'll go on with my everyday life. This is my hometown," Gilliard said to WCIV-TV. "I believe in what I'm doing, and many other people believe in what I'm doing. We always have to stand for what's right."
