Phoenix honored Dr. Martin Luther King’s 94th birthday with its annual parade on Monday. This year, the city had a special guest — Phoenix Mercury star Brittney Griner. The WNBA player was in attendance less than six weeks after being released from a Russian prison.
Griner was at the parade with her wife, Cherelle. According to NBC News, Griner seemed in good spirits and was happy to take pictures and interact with fans, who were excited to see the hooper as she rode around on the back of a golf cart.
The 32-year-old told local news outlet KPNX that she is glad to be back home.
Jonathan McCall, a 12 News anchor, shared images and a video of Griner meeting with city residents.
Griner has been a revered sports figure in Phoenix since signing with the Mercury in 2013. She took the team to the WNBA finals, which led to the third championship in the Mercury’s history.
The center was recently named “Arizonan of the Year” by the Arizona Republic. The outlet decided to highlight Griner because “no other Arizona newsmaker in 2022 captured the public eye as intensely as she did. Nor has anyone’s story in this state aroused the kind of fear and foreboding that hers had for nearly 300 days.”
Griner had the nation’s attention when she was released from a Russian penal colony after a monumental prisoner swap.
Blavity reported at the time that she was released on Dec. 8 in exchange for international arms dealer Viktor Bout.
Russian officials detained Griner on Feb. 17, 2022, after she attempted to bring vape cartridges that contained cannabis oil through the airport.
Griner was in the country to play basketball for the national team.
On Aug. 4, she was sentenced to nine years in prison after pleading guilty in July.
Her family continuously worked with the U.S. government to appeal her sentence.
After months of negotiations, Griner was brought home.

Griner has expressed gratitude to her fans who supported her during her trying times.
During the holidays, she penned a letter to her supporters thanking them for the letters and kind words she received while in prison.
In her statement, she urged supporters to continue to send letters and positive support to Paul Whelan, the former Marine detained in Russia for four years on accusations of espionage.
