Kamala Harris emerged as the crowd favorite on Twitter during last night's Democratic debate. However, many were left scratching their heads after MSNBC host Chris Matthews asked the California senator why she doesn’t hate white people.
The odd question came after the debate as Harris challenged former Vice President Joe Biden on his past work with segregationists and his opposition of busing programs for school integration.
“This is really important to people of all backgrounds, all ethnicities; I don’t like the word ‘race’,” Matthews stated in conversation with Harris. “How did you come out of that and not have hatred toward white people generally?”
Harris’ face afterward said it all.
Senator Harris, do you hate white people?

Per usual, Twitter had a lot to say and tried to piece together why the Hardball host posed the question.
Chris Matthews just asked Kamala Harris how she managed to grow up in the U.S. and not hate white people.
Goodnight, y'all. #DemDebate2

From Matthews’ aversion to the word “race” to him constantly cutting people off as they talked, many were frustrated with him by the end of the night.
I hate to ask this, but it’s a thought I have every couple months: How is this man still on television? https://t.co/Q0ADPjSnBl
