CNN senior political reporter Abby Phillip revealed that she is preparing to welcome a baby girl into her family this summer.
In an intimate interview for The Cut, Gayle King
talked with Phillip about her rise in the media industry and how she’s been able to stay true to herself while tackling tough issues. Near the end of the chat, she shared with King that she and husband Marcus Richardson are expecting a child and that the experience has brought her a greater appreciation of a woman’s strength.
"The experience of pregnancy has only made me become more in awe of what we as women are able to endure. It was tough: battling morning sickness while balancing a demanding job with long, unpredictable hours. But it has been a reminder of what I am capable of — and what so many women do every day," she said.
On Instagram, the 32-year-old posted a picture of the latest cover of The Cut magazine, which features a glowing Phillip in a beautiful dress, caressing her baby bump.
"[We] are having a baby girl this summer! I shot this cover then I was 4 months pregnant and I can't wait to be able to tell my baby girl that she was on the cover a magazine … ???????????? there are just no words," Phillip wrote.
The journalist, who is of Trinidadian descent, has been married to Richardson since May 2018, and they have been a couple for nearly 10 years. The pair lives in Washington, D.C., and has a dog named Booker T, People reported.
Phillip told King that her husband is a major part of her success because of how supportive he is as a partner.
“Look, if you’re in this business, you can’t do it without someone who is flexible, because your life is just a mess. It’s unpredictable, it’s busy, it’s ever-changing. And he’s just always like, ‘What do you need? How can I help you,’” she said. “I remember one of our first dates — we were supposed to meet up and I left my wallet at home and I was an hour and a half late. He just waited and wasn’t pissed off. I swear to God, I knew then.”
Earlier this year, the savvy reporter landed a self-titled show on the CNN network called Inside Politics Sunday with Abby Phillip, as Blavity previously reported.
To kick off what has been a busy year, Phillip also presided over the Democratic presidential debate in Iowa. In January, she debuted a documentary with Vice President Kamala Harris called Kamala Harris: Making History and moderated an interview with Harris and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff.
The 32-year-old first joined CNN in 2017 to cover the Trump administration after working as a national political correspondent for The Washington Post.
While at The Washington Post, the Harvard graduate became known for her coverage of former President Donald Trump and his efforts to try to repeal the Affordable Care Act. She also reported on the former president’s international trips to Poland and Germany during the G-20 summit in 2019.
