When asked about how he believed that Nancy Reagan would feel about the candidates in the running to represent the party invoking the name and legacy of her husband, former president, Ronald Reagan, he said, “some of the people invoking his legacy, really, are not applying his legacy in their political campaigning.”

Powell said he thought that Nancy Reagan would be “disturbed” to see the way that the former head of state was being used as a way for hopeful Republican nominees to tie themselves to the image of the man without practicing what he was about.

To drive his point home, even further, Mr. Powell said, “Even Jerry Springer thinks it’s gone too far, and when Jerry Springer thinks you’ve gone too far, my friends, you have gone too far.”, in reference to Springer’s comments in the Financial Times . Before becoming a television show host, Jerry Springer was a former Democratic Mayor of Cincinnati in the 1970s. However, Powell did not directly call out any of the candidates by name.

What do you think about Colin Powell’s assessment of the GOP candidates? Let us know in the comments!
