A second Prince documentary is reportedly in the works; this one hails from French-American photographer, art director and filmmaker Mathieu Bitton, who is co-directing with writer, journalist and TV producer Frédéric Bénudis.

Bitton, an “obsessed Prince fan since the age of nine,” is a long-time artistic collaborator of Lenny Kravitz, and has worked with the likes of Grace Jones, James Brown, Sting, Bob Dylan and even Quentin Tarantino.

Titled “Prince: Pop Life,” the film, which will unfold like a road-trip (from Paris to New York to LA), promises a comprehensive portrait chronicling the musical icon’s life (on- and off-stage; personal and professional) and his legacy, featuring exclusive archive footage, new interviews and even animated segments created by filmmaker Joann Sfar (“The Rabbi’s Cat” and “Gainsbourg: A Heroic Life”). It will also cover his legal fights, including his contractual battle with Warner Bros. that led to him changing his name to a symbol.

French film distribution and international sales company Wild Bunch has come on board to represent the film.

“It will be music driven with a lot of exclusive footage,” said Wild Bunch co-chief Vincent Maraval. “Joann’s animated sections will be there to express Prince’s creativity and the parts of his life when he disappeared from the public eye…. There will be a lot of stuff from behind the scenes which fans were not aware about.”

Black Dynamite Production is producing the doc, although no ETA at this time.

“Prince: Pop Life” joins a previously-announced (in November 2016) Prince documentary from acclaimed Emmy and Peabody-award winning director and producer Michael John Kirk, known for his stellar work on the PBS documentary series “Frontline.”

Titled “Prince: R U Listening?”, The film will chart Prince’s early years and rise to super-stardom, as seen through the eyes of his bandmates, friends and family, including contributors Dez Dickerson, Prince’s first guitar player, Andre Cymone, Prince’s close friend and original bassist, as well as Bono, Mick Jagger, Billy Idol, Lenny Kravitz and Sheila E. to name a few.

Swiss distributor Ascot Elite Entertainment Group has acquired all rights to what has been described as a high-profile independently-produced documentary that is being backed by US international sales and finance company 13 Films.

A mid- to late 2017 release for “Prince: R U Listening?” is eyed, likely on the international film festival circuit.

No other details are available on either project at this time. But we’ll certainly be watching for both.
