Florida Christian School is selling bulletproof panels to parents, for their kids' backpacks in case of an active shooter situation. The school's website has a list of items available for purchase including winter wear, red school logo T-shirts and ballistic panels.
America has witnessed five of the worst mass killings in modern history, in the last 10 years. One of the most detrimental of them was the nightclub shooting in Orlando in 2016 and the deadliest occurring just over a month ago in Las Vegas.
Since these incidents, fellow Americans have opted to take measures into their own hands to ensure the safety of its people. These such tragedies have sparked a wide interest in bulletproof products, as people seek ways to protect themselves from the unpredictable. For this Miami private school, there was no measure too extreme to protect its young scholars and staff.
Although the school has never had a shooting incident, Florida Christian School head of school security and dean of students, George Gulla, informed CNN that the panels would provide "another level of protection in the event of an active shooter." The panels currently cost $120, and teachers are trained to instruct students on how to use the backpacks as shields for protection.
School security expert Kenneth Trump told CNN that making bulletproof items available to children is a "quick fix" and could cause more harm than good.
"The first and best line of defense is a well-trained staff and student body," Trump said. "If you need a bulletproof backpack, don't you need a bulletproof front pack, headgear, and bulletproofing the rest of your body down to your toes?"
Either way, the idea that our children have the option to use bulletproof panels to protect themselves in case of a mass shooting in their own schools is frightening and should be enough to make our country's leaders more adamant about creating better gun laws.
