The House of Representatives passed H.R 9 also known as the Climate Action Now Act, which would prevent President Donald Trump from removing the United States from the Paris climate agreement.
The legislation requires the Trump administration to develop a plan to meet standards set in the Paris agreement and block federal funds from being used to advance a formal withdrawal from the Paris accords.
“Our climate crisis impacts us all but no one more so than our vulnerable friends and neighbors,” said Congressman A. Donald McEachin, who voted for the Climate Action Now Act in a statement to Blavity. “Staying in the Paris Climate Agreement will encourage us to develop and provide the tools and resources necessary to address the long-standing injustices faced by our at-risk communities every day – and help to prevent future injustices.”
That clean economy would greatly help the Black community more than others with the health burden suffered by Blacks is 54 percent higher than that of the average American, according to a study released by the EPA.
“The air quality in many of the communities served by National Medical Association physicians is a dangerous threat to the lives of our patients.” Niva Lubin-Johnson, M.D., FACP President of the National Medical Association said in a statement. “The American Lung Association’s latest State of the Air report makes clear that climate change is making the state of our already-polluted air even worse. It means the health and safety of our communities- particularly African American communities-are at heightened risks if we fail to take real actions now.”
The bill is now on to the Senate where it is not expected to be brought up for a vote. Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell called the bill "political theater" by Democrats.
