It’s trendy to talk about diversity, equity and inclusion (DE&I) right now. But when people move on to the next hot topic, it will remain important for company leaders to ensure DE&I is part of their organization’s DNA. Human resources executive Mardel Nesby is responsible for that mission at Clover, a point-of-sale and business management system that enables success for small and medium-sized businesses.

Nesby has more than 20 years of experience in human resources across various industries — cable/broadcasting, publishing and aerospace, to name a few. His focus throughout his career has been to lead initiatives and teams that drive top and bottom-line growth and employee growth within high-performing organizations. As vice president and head of human resources for Clover, Nesby helps build a talent strategy and pipeline that enables growth within the small and medium-sized business segments.

“I’m responsible for understanding our merchants, knowing where we sell our products and having a deep understanding of our business to ensure we have the right talent in place so Clover can enable these small businesses to succeed,” he says.

The opportunity to bring in high-quality employees with diverse backgrounds is what attracted Nesby to Clover. “We have strong talent in the organization and need to continue to attract great talent with diverse experiences that support and drive an innovative culture. That business opportunity to truly make a difference for small business owners — combined with a heightened need to attract and develop talent and the global reach of the company — makes for a great recipe for a long-term career.”

Fiserv leadership understands that part of retaining good talent is recognizing employees’ unique needs and offering support. For example, the company has eight employee resource groups — voluntary networks that unite employees who share a common background, identity, characteristic, affiliation or life experience, as well as those communities’ allies. Fiserv also participates in career fairs and conferences focused on unique populations to create brand awareness for potential new hires. The company recently sponsored and took part in the 2022 National Society of Black Engineers annual convention; is a proud partner of the National Black MBA Association; and is set to engage in the Hispanic IT Executive Conference.

Associates can join leadership in advancing DE&I efforts at Fiserv by supporting the Back2Business initiative. Back2Business from Fiserv is a $50 million commitment to help minority-owned small businesses emerge from the economic impact of the pandemic and social unrest in local neighborhoods. “The launch of the Back2Business program was a great way to support our DE&I actions at Fiserv. Associates have the opportunity to learn about Black- and minority-owned businesses, as well as engage with and patronize those businesses,” Nesby says. “There’s a sense of pride and unity in supporting these businesses in our communities.”
