Issa Rae was a guest judge on HBO’s Legendary, a reality show where teams create a themed performance. For the episode’s horror theme, Rae decided to honor Aaliyah’s character from the movie Queen of the Damned, Queen Akasha, according to PopSugar.
Rae wore a replicated costume, an embellished crown and an African queen-inspired necklace on the show.
Rae’s love for the late singer was seen in her YouTube series, Awkward Black Girl, where she comedically honored Aaliyah in a dream hip-hop cypher.

Queen of the Damned was released in February 2002. Before the movie’s release, the “Rock the Boat” songstress spoke about the character.
“I had a lot of fun doing [Queen of the Damned]. I was very excited to be part of a vampire film because I’ve been a lover of vampires since I was very young,” the singer told ET in May 2001. “And not only was this a vampire film — it was Anne Rice.”
