Camryn Crowder took heroism to another level this weekend when he jumped in front of his girlfriend during a tragic mass shooting in Dayton, Ohio.

The country was horrified when news broke early Sunday morning that Connor Betts had shot and killed nine people in Dayton before being killed by police.

Crowder's girlfriend, Brittany Dungey, gave birth three weeks ago to their first child. Saturday was their first night out since she delivered the baby.

The shooting started as they were strolling along a sidewalk in the Oregon District. As they began to run away, Dungey slipped and fell. Crowder instantly jumped on top of her and dragged her to safety behind a concrete barrier.

"This is my hero. In that moment, I thought we were gonna die. I fell down so fast I thought I got shot," she told Inside Edition. "He's the best boyfriend in the world."

Crowder told news outlets that he would do anything to protect Dungey.

"I felt that it would've been easier for me honestly to get shot than to have to come back and explain why [my daughter] doesn't have a mother. That would've been hard for me to talk to my daughter about and explain why she wasn't here," Crowder told CBS 10 earlier this week.

In an interview with another local news outlet, Crowder said he witnessed four people get hit by bullets and saw a trail of bodies behind him as they ran.

When asked whether he was a hero, he said, "Definitely not. Definitely not."

"I feel like anybody would've done the same thing in the same situation. Anyone you love and care about in any type of way – they're going to do the same thing," he added.

"What I did is natural because it's what any man would do in that situation."
