Citizens who have made it their mission to identify the white supremacists appearing in Unite the Right rally photos allege Michael Miselis has been allowed to keep his government security clearance despite both his ties to a white supremacist organization and being caught on camera brutally beating a black counterprotester to the ground.

In an report from PBS/ProPublica, journalists used a combination of social media posts and video footage to identify Miselis as the man seen attacking protesters at the August 2017 rally. One video clearly shows his attack on a black man; another shows him choking and hitting two women until they became bloody.

Miselis is also a member of The Rise Above Movement, a California-based alt-right group that is openly hostile toward immigrants, Jews and Muslims.

Reporters approached Miselis in his front yard. He claimed he “didn’t know anything” about the rally.

“I think you got the wrong guy,” he told reporters before leaving in his car.

Miselis is a Ph.D student in UCLA’s aerospace engineering program and works for Northrop Grumman as a systems engineer. Miselis’ work with a computer modeling and simulation group for his employer earned him security clearance from the Department of Defense. That clearance means Miselis could have access to classified information related to national security.

Northrop has issued a statement to Quartz saying it will investigate the claims.

“Northrop Grumman was recently made aware of alleged employee actions that are counter to our values,” the company said. “Northrop Grumman is absolutely committed to the highest levels of ethics and integrity in all that we do, and ensuring that our workplace reflects our values of diversity and inclusion. We do not tolerate hatred or illegal conduct and we condemn racist activities in any shape or form. We are taking immediate action to look into the very serious issues raised by these reports.”

UCLA declined to comment, other than to say Miselis is "technically on leave" from his Ph.D program.

The FBI would not "confirm or deny" any active projects regarding Miselis' group at Northrop, but law enforcement officials close to the situation say a formal investigation has begun.
