Mo’Nique took to Instagram with her husband, Sidney Hicks, to clear up their side of the story in her ongoing beef with D.L. Hughley. In a lengthy Instagram Live, the married couple unpacked the comedian’s rocky relationship with Hughley, describing the current conflict as the “icing on the cake.”

As Blavity previously reported, the beef began after the 54-year-old spoke about a contract identifying her as the headliner at the Comedy Explosion in Detroit. A video of Mo’Nique addressing the conflict on stage shows the comedian calling out Hughley, the HuffPost reports.

“Y’all don’t understand the fight a b***h had to go through to stand in front of y’all tonight,” the Precious star said.

She continued, saying that she “was ready to walk the f**k up out of here, but I said, ‘I can’t let the people down.'”

“I’m 30-plus years in this motherf**king business and I don’t open for no goddamn body. The contract said ‘the headliner,'” she added.

Since then, Hughley and Mo’Nique have lashed out at each other on social media with both posting their version of the disputed contract.

Hughley also addressed the conflict on his radio show.

Now, Mo’Nique and her husband are letting her fans know that their beef goes back years. Mo’Nique implied that Hughley has had a problem with her for awhile, describing an incident on his radio show where she was asked a “would you rather” question by producers while he wasn’t there.

“[They said] ‘Hey Mo’Nique, would you rather your husband sleep with Lee Daniels with a condom or Corrine Stephens without one,” she said.

Mo’Nique said she refused to answer the question and instead, called Hughley to discuss the issue. She said after reaching out about the question, he had a less than warm response.

“That’s just how we do and that’s how it is,” she said he told her. “[That] let me know that for whatever reason D.L. Hughley was not cool with me.”

As the video went on, Mo’Nique and Hicks spoke about the comedian’s alleged beef with other entertainers, saying that he always “throws smoke and mirrors to distract from what it is.”

The couple also said that Mo’Nique never directly attacked Hughley’s family.

Hicks and Mo’Nique said that ultimately Hughley could “not meet the challenge” of going on after her. They added, however, that they’re open to discussing the matter with Hughley.

Toward the end of the Instagram Live, Mo’Nique urged Black women to stand up for themselves.

“Every woman out there be unflinching in your position,” she said. “Be unwavering in your position, and don’t let a damn soul bully you.”
