A reporter for the Virginian-Pilot was shot and killed Saturday morning outside of a restaurant. Another person was killed and three others were injured during the shooting, CNN reports.

An editor at the newspaper called Sierra Jenkins, 25, who was scheduled to cover breaking news that Saturday, but later learned the reporter was one of the victims.

“When he didn’t hear back, we called in another reporter,” Virginian-Pilot editor-in-chief Kris Worrell said, according to CNN. “In reporting the story of the shooting, we discovered that Sierra was one of the victims.”

Jenkins was with a friend at Chicho’s Pizza Backstage in Norfolk when an argument began and gunshots rang outside the restaurant around 1:30 a.m., according to USA Today.

When police officers arrived at the location, they pronounced one victim, 25-year-old Devon Harris, dead at the scene.

Jenkins was “suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound,” police said, according to USA Today, and he later died at the Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Another woman was also wounded and two men suffered non-threatening ballistic injuries.

Jenkins, a former CNN news assistant who worked as an education reporter for The Virginian-Pilot, was beloved by her colleagues and community.

Worrell spoke highly of Jenkins, describing her as a “bright and talented woman with so much promise.”

“Her passion for journalism was undeniable, and our community is better because of her reporting. She brought both energy and empathy to her work as an education reporter,” she continued, CNN reports.

“To have the life of such a talented young person cut short is devastating,” added Worrell. “Our thoughts are with Sierra’s family and all those who knew and loved her. We are absolutely heartbroken.”

Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin and the president of the National Association of Black Journalists, Dorothy Tucker, also paid their respects to the reporter on Twitter.

Jenkins, a Norfolk native, graduated from Georgia State University in 2019 and interned at Atlanta magazine and CNN before landing a reporting job at The Virginian-Pilot in Dec. 2020.

Norfolk Police are still investigating the shooting and have made no arrest.
