Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda put former president Barack Obama in the booth for the remix to one of the songs from the hit Broadway play.
The 44th president appeared on “One Last Time (44 Remix),” reciting words from America’s first president, George Washington, reports The New York Times. The song also features Christopher Jackson, who portrayed Washington in the original cast.
The speech President Obama laid down comes from an actual one written by Washington at the end of his second presidential term, according to Our Documents. Washington wrote the 32-page document in 1796 to announce he would not seek another presidential run and instead intended to head to his Virginia home.
Obama’s participation is particularly poignant because his “Yes We Can” mantra inspired Manuel to write the song in the first place. Additionally, the cast performed the OG version of the song at the White House in 2015.
“It starts spoken, and then Washington begins singing — it's a straight grab of the "Yes We Can" video where they sing the speech under it. That's where we learned the technique. And so in that particular song, we owe a very specific debt — and really, more to Will.i.am. [who wrote the song] than Obama — but to Obama,” Manuel told The Hollywood Reporter in 2015.
As it turns out, the love is mutual. President Obama caught Hamilton fever with the rest of the country. According to the former president, the musical enjoyed a bipartisan fandom, The Hill reports.
“It has become a favorite in the Obama household,” Obama said in 2016. “In fact, Hamilton, I’m pretty sure, is the only thing that Dick Cheney and I agree on.”
This track is Manuel’s latest installment for “Hamildrops,” a series of songs related to the play created to raise money for charity. Listen to it below:
