When 10-year-old Olivia Ohlson received news this past spring that her mother had been diagnosed with breast cancer she immediately knew she wanted to help make things better. With the help of her grandmother, Ohlson started selling pink lemonade and shortbread cookies in her Evanston, Ill., neighborhood.
She still wanted to do more to help her mother, so she began petitioning local bake shops, sharing her touching story and asking them to donate baked goods (often with pink breast cancer awareness ribbon designs) to be sold in an effort to raise money for cancer patients.
“It was very touching,” says Gretchen Vetter of Tag’s Bakery in Evanston, Illinois. “I was very moved by it, so I was more than willing to help.”
To date, Ohlson has raised over $4,500 all to be donated to the Northside Kellog Cancer Center where her mom is undergoing treatment.
"I know my mom has lots of family and friends who take care of her, but other people don’t so they need more support," Olivia tells reporters. "By giving Kellogg money they can use it for patients."
