After a historic win and an incredibly moving speech at the Golden Globes last night, Oprah Winfrey's name is buzzing through the media even more than usual. Winfrey essentially let us know that a change gon' come, or as she eloquently put it "a new day is on the horizon," and according to a couple of sources, she may be at the forefront of that new day.
CNN reports that two of Winfrey's close friends reveal that people have definitely been privately urging her to run. While these conversations have dated back for months, Winfrey has yet to make her mind up.
While the Democratic race for president won't officially begin until after the 2018 midterms, many candidates are already warming up. Oprah's fame and wealth could very easily put her in the running for candidacy, the only issue is that she lacks political experience. Of course, that didn't seem to stop the 45, but according to CNN, even the insiders have to ask: would Americans really choose a TV star as president twice in a row?
While she does not have political experience herself, Winfrey is no stranger to campaigning having both campaigned for Barack Obama in 2008 and endorsed Hillary Clinton in 2016.
In an interview with Winfrey on Bloomberg last March, when interviewer David Rubenstein hinted at the possibility, she indicated that it had crossed her mind after Trump's election.
"I thought, 'Oh gee, I don't have the experience, I don't know enough,'" she said "And now I'm thinking, 'Oh. Oh!'"
That wasn't the last time Oprah publicly played at the idea of running for President. Back in September, Oprah responded via Twitter to a piece that she should run in 2020 with “Thanks for your VOTE of confidence!”

The most important question to ask in a possible Winfrey 2020 campaign is will she have time? After all, this is Oprah we're talking about. She's the CEO of the cable channel OWN, a "special correspondent" for the CBS newsmagazine "60 Minutes" and an investor in companies like Weight Watchers. Not to mention, she's recently renewed her contract to remain CEO of OWN through 2025.
However, fellow actors and her fans alike see her as the perfect candidate and a breath of fresh air from Trump. Meryl Streep made it clear that she wants Winfrey to run.
"I want her to run for president," Streep told The Washington Post last night after Winfrey's speech. "I don't think she had any intention [of declaring]. But now she doesn't have a choice."
Adding Leader of the Free World to her list of job titles? If anyone could do it, Oprah Winfrey could.
