In 2015, the #OscarsSoWhite hashtag gained traction to accumulate awareness of The Academy Awards’ lack of recognition for actors who don't fall under the category of a white man. This happened just a few years ago, but the fact of the matter is, many Black thespians and filmmakers have been snubbed by the annual ceremony. The beauty of Black filmmaking is that authentic stories from many parts of the Black experience are displayed visually, telling the stories of so many of us. They must be recognized for telling our stories on our terms with one of the greatest accomplishments one can achieve. From not being nominated at all to losing out in major categories that seemed like a no-brainer, we’ve decided to compile a list of 10 Black films that have been slighted at The Academy Awards.

1. Black Panther, Best Picture

2. Lady Sings the Blues, Best Actress

3. Hidden Figures, Best Picture

4. Do the Right Thing, Best Original Screenplay

5. The Color Purple, Best Picture

6. What’s Love Got to Do with It, Best Actress

7. Malcolm X, Best Actor

8. School Daze, Best Picture

9. Fruitvale Station, Best Picture

10. 13th, Best Documentary Feature

While it remains true that these films were snubbed out of nominations and awards, that doesn’t take away from the fact that these are cultural artifacts within the Black community. We will uphold and cherish them for years to come regardless of whether an awards ceremony decides to do so.
