Snapchat shouldn't be a safe place for racism; however, that's exactly what it has seemed to become. Another racist snap post has gone viral, this time at George Washington University.
Outrage has followed the post showing two women holding a banana with a caption that reads: "I'm 1/16 black."

The two women in the photo are members of the sorority Alpha Phi. If that sorority sounds familiar, it's because only a couple weeks ago, another Alpha Phi member at the University of Alabama got bold and spewed some racist commentary including the word "n****r."
Following circulation of this snap post, George Washington's Black Student Union posted a statement on Instagram reading, in part, “Historically, White people have dehumanized Black people to animals such as monkeys as means to justify their horrendous mistreatment which includes enslavement, and murder.”
University Provost Forrest Maltzman has also released a statement, deeming the post "disturbing, hurtful and not reflective of who I know we are as a community."
Images like the one posted on social media last night can make people question whether they are welcome at the university, and that is unacceptable. Read Provost Maltzman’s full message to the community: https://t.co/9fv4hlpFAd

This is not the first time white college students have taunted black people with bananas; a few months ago, Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority sisters were taunted with bananas hanging from nooses at American University.
Sadly, this is the America we live in.
