Entrepreneur and philanthropist Derrick Hayes asked longtime partner Pinky Cole, the founder of the popular vegan food chain Slutty Vegan, to marry him on stage during day two of Essence Festival, Essence reports.

The newly engaged couple were speakers at the Essence Marketplace event, which provided a community for Black-owned businesses. Under the guise of sharing some additional wisdom, Hayes got out of his seat with the microphone and started talking to his now-fiancee.

“You’ve had my back for a long time … I want to make it real,” he said with a ring box in his hand.

Hayes’ remarks were muffled under the crowd cheering him on. He then got on one knee and placed a ring on Cole’s finger as she teared up.

“Of course I do! F**k yeah, I do!” she said, talking to both Hayes and the crowd.

Cole shared the moment on Instagram where she described it as “one of the best days of my life.”

“Because I was tired of calling you my partner,” she wrote in the caption.

She also gave fans a look at her engagement ring, which features a pear-shaped and haloed diamond on a unique infinity band.

Cole is currently pregnant with the couple’s second child. The pair welcomed their first child, D Ella, in February.

To celebrate their new bundle of joy, Hayes surprised Cole with an intimate baby shower hosted by Cole’s best friends and big sister, People reports.

The soon-to-be dad of two told People that “hiding it from Pinky was definitely hard” and he “had to do a little maneuvering to get around her.”

Cole was touched by the gesture, sharing that she was “totally overwhelmed with love and excitement to see all of the very special people in my life come together to celebrate the birth of our baby.”
