In an attempt to bring about a truce, Democratic Rep. Elijah Cummings invited President Donald Trump to visit Baltimore in wake of their ongoing feud.

Cummings made the offer during the opening of a small community garden near his Baltimore home on Saturday. The Associated Press reports the garden was transformed from a vacant lot once known for trash dumping.

“Come to Baltimore. Do not just criticize us, but come to Baltimore and I promise you, you will be welcomed,” he said warmly.

Over the past two weeks, Trump has lashed out at the Maryland politician blaming him for corruption and crime in the city. The president called Baltimore a "crime and rat-infested" heap in several attacks against members of congress.

The 68-year-old was also asked if members of the House were on the verge of initiating impeachment hearings in wake of the Mueller probe.

“There may well come a time when impeachment is appropriate,” he told reporters.

Cummings did not give reporters a clear answer. He told media he will follow House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's lead and continue their investigations. “I’m trying to be fair to him,” he said. “That’s why we need to do our research.”

Earlier in the week, the seasoned lawmaker said someone attempted to break into his home around 3:40 a.m.

"I was notified of the intrusion by my security system, and I scared the intruder away by yelling before the person gained entry into the residential portion of the house," he said in a statement.

Trump responded to the news with a tweet seemingly mocking Cummings, assuring the two will not patch over differences.
