In an effort to honor the late Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman, residents from his hometown of Anderson, South Carolina, are drumming up support to replace a Confederate monument with a memorial of the 43-year-old actor.

DeAndre Weaver launched a petition to replace the local Confederate monument with a legacy everyone can be proud of, the New York Post reports.

"I believe that Mr.Boseman is worthy of the spot that is currently occupied in the town square. For those unfamiliar with Anderson, where the confederate monument is currently located is in the center of the town,” he wrote on Change.org. “One cannot go downtown with[out] seeing or passing by this monument. I know from personal experience. I am not just a fan of Mr.Boseman but so happened to attend college in his hometown and went on to become the first Black graduate from BFA Acting program at Anderson University."

Weaver said the statue was often the first thing he’d see while walking to classes, despite it being symbolic of a time when Black people wouldn’t be allowed to attend the university.

The statue displays a soldier standing on a platform in front of the courthouse, with a message that reads: “The world shall yet decide, in truth’s clear, far-off light, that the soldiers who wore the gray, and died with Lee, were in the right,” per The Historical Marker Database.

The petition asks for the statue to be replaced, not destroyed. Weaver suggests that it be moved to the Anderson County Museum and Boseman’s memorial would be the ideal replacement.

“As fellow citizens go about their day they should have a face that sees all people as equal. That sees all citizens regardless of outward appearance as a member of the Anderson community,” he wrote.

Regardless of the result of the petition, the statue might not be touched at all. Confederate statues in South Carolina are guarded by the Heritage Act and would require state sign-off to remove, according to The Post And Courier.

After a four-year battle with colon cancer, Boseman died in his home in Los Angeles on Aug. 28, as Blavity previously reported.  According to a statement released on his Twitter, the 43-year-old filmed recent movies like Spike Lee's Da Five Bloods while dealing with chemotherapy treatment and medical surgeries.
