ScHoolboy Q revealed Kendrick Lamar‘s influence on his music career saved his life. The “That Part” rapper, who was Lamar’s hype man at the beginning of his career, credited the 36-year-old with helping him become the star he is today.
“Dot taught me so much, bro,” he said on the BACKONFIGG podcast, Vibe reported. “Dot… Dot gave me… Dot gave me so much confidence. Dot made me a rapper. This s**t make me want to cry right now.”
After joking about crying while talking about Mac Miller’s death on The Breakfast Club in 2019, the Los Angeles native discussed Lamar’s impact on him personally and professionally.
“Dot saved my life,” he shared. “I owe a lot to Dot.”
ScHoolboy Q revealed Top Dawg Entertainment CEO Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith and Terrence “Punch” Henderson, Top Dawg Entertainment’s president, held several “interventions” with him and were close to ending his deal with the label. He added that Lamar played a pivotal role in preventing the latter.
“Dot made me his hypeman; he would tell me to come to the studio all the time,” the “Man of the Year” rapper said of Lamar’s attempts to keep him at Top Dawg.
ScHoolboy Q also shared that Lamar had his back while negotiating his recording contract with Interscope Records. He said while that was happening, the “Swimming Pools (Drank)” rapper invited him to observe recording sessions with him and Dr. Dre.
“Even with Dre, Dre was initially interested in Kendrick,” he remembered. “And then every time he went to Dre s**t, he’s like, ‘I’m going to Dre s**t. I’m going to Dre s**t, pull up, pull up. I was like his lil’ sidekick,” ScHoolboy Q continued, “Next thing you know, Dre hearing my s**t. And then I get my deal because of Dre really. I get signed to Interscope because Dre was f**king with me. He just kept pulling me, kept pulling me.”
The “Chopstix” MC shared that Lamar dropped him as a hypeman following the success of his first project, 2011’s Setbacks. He said he’s never looked back or “left the studio” since.
