Three young black boys in the United Kingdom were given an award for their bravery in saving a man's life according to the Hertfordshire Mercury.
Devonte Cafferkey, 13, and Sammy Farah, 14, saw a man moments away from jumping off a bridge about to commit suicide when they ran over to help him. Shawn Young, 12, called for help.
The boys were walking home from school when they noticed the man sitting on the edge of the bridge."I feel like they were meant to be there to help him." Young's mom, Carol, said.
While the schoolchildren were talking the man away from his decision to end his life, other bystanders joined in to help. Joanne Stammers rushed to help the boys when she noticed what was going on.
She held onto the man "for what feels like forever" and left the situation with bruises on her arms. James Higlett also saw the situation and intervened to do his part in the life-saving mission.
All five of these heroes were awarded by the Royal Humane Society for their good deeds.
“I am extremely proud of all three of them, they are all good boys and it’s nice that they are getting recognized for doing something good in the community," Carol said. "Quite often in the national news, there are a lot of negative reports about young people so it is nice to have something positive."
The three boys attend St Mary’s High School. The trio also received a special achievement award at the Broxbourne Youth Awards for their heroism. The boys are recovering well from both the incident and their newfound fame.
They “just got on with it," Carol said.
