We were rooting for Troop 6000 and their goal to sell 6,000 boxes of Girl Scout cookies, and they did not disappoint.
In an earlier story, Blavity reported the group's goal and encouraged readers to support their initiative. Today, we're happy to report they not only made their goal, but they knocked it out of the park with over 32,000 boxes sold.
This special troop is comprised of girls living in homeless shelters, but that didn’t stop them from putting in work. Unlike traditional scouts, they’re unable to deliver cookies to their patrons so they set up shop at Kellogg’s Café in New York’s Union Square and sold cookies online. With the help of social media, they sold 32,500 boxes in six days and received over $15,000 in donations. The money will allow the girls to go on field trips, do camping activities and other programs.
Meridith Maskara, CEO of Girl Scouts Greater New York, said the project was a “resounding success.”
“One Wednesday afternoon, the girls walked into the store, a line had formed and the crowd cheered for them,” said Maskara. “This shows their current situation doesn’t define who they are. It’s one of those humanizing moments in New York that makes it feel like a small town.”
Ten-year-old scout Sanaa is elated with the news.
“I’m so happy,” Sanaa said to NBC News. “People from all over came out to support us. They told us how much they love the Girl Scouts.”
Sanaa is determined to keep the momentum going for next year.
“Next year we are going to reach a higher goal,” she said.
