Mekhi Johnson is black history in the making. Recently, 17-year-old Johnson was accepted into eight Ivy League schools, according to the Baltimore Sun.
“As soon as I saw I got into Harvard, my mom started screaming,” he said. “She started yelling, ‘My son just got into Harvard,’ and everyone in the restaurant started clapping.”
Johson is a senior at the Gilman School in Maryland, and has attended that school since the first grade. Even as a child, Johnson made it his goal to get accepted into multiple Ivy League schools.
“Even at six, he was pretty serious and goal-oriented,” his mother said. “He kept this idea in front of him through all those years. It’s a wonderful thing, and is certainly a testament to what you can do when you set your mind to it."
Johnson was left speechless at his accomplishment.
“I didn’t have words then, and I don’t have words now,” he said. “I just felt extraordinary."
Johnson is very active in his school. He holds a 98.1-grade average, is part of the yearbook and the jazz club. He also volunteers to serve kids in low-income communities.
Jonshon's goal is to study political science and to work towards fixing systematic racism.
“Going to law school seems like an effective way to do that,” he said.
He was accepted into Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, Dartmouth, University of Pennsylvania, Brown and Cornell. Johnson hasn't picked a school yet, but has to decide by May 1.
We know whatever school he decides on, success will follow. We are rooting for!
