The Dance Theatre of Harlem has been a beacon of light in the dance community for years, especially for persons of color. The programs offered there, more specifically ballet, are definitely tailored to promote representation.
The venerable institution just released a short film entitled High Above, premiering it on The Huffington Post. A young child follows her grandiose dream of becoming a dancer after a tragedy strikes her family. We see a poignant connection between the film's characters with the help of an India.Arie score. It's a testament to the impact proper representation has in the cultural sphere and how certain stories transcend generations without our knowledge. The film was directed by Daniel Schloss and written by Charlie Sohne.
