A white retired firefighter from Michigan is facing charges for shooting at 14-year-old Brennan Walker last week. Jeffery Craig Zeigler, 53, shot at Walker outside his home in the Detroit suburb of Rochester Hills when the black teen tried asking for directions to school.

According to CNN, Zeigler was charged with assault with intent to murder and possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony on Friday. He has since been released on a $50,000 bond.

Last Thursday, Walker attempted to walk to school after missing his bus. He knocked on a stranger's door to ask for assistance with directions. The teen said a woman first came to the door and immediately accused him of attempting to break in her home. Ziegler then reportedly came to the door with a gun and shot at Walker as he ran away. Walker was not injured.

Deputies responded to a call for an attempted break-in, but only Zeigler was arrested after officials brought him and the teen in for questioning, CNN reported. During the arraignment, a prosecutor said that surveillance video disproved Zeigler's recollection of the incident.

Walker's mother, Lisa, previously told reporters that surveillance video revealed the woman asked, "Why did these people choose my house?" at the time of the incident.

"I knew it was racially motivated," Walker's mother told WXYZ last week.

A plea of not guilty was entered for Zeigler during his arraignment, CNN reported. Zeigler was also ordered to turn over his firearms, wear a GPS monitor and remain 10 miles from the teenager – which means he likely won't be allowed to live at home until the trial.
