Best known for documenting Malian pop culture in the 1960s, famed photographer Malick Sidibé has passed away at the age of 80. Sidibé’s nephew confirmed his uncle’s death on Friday, April 15th, saying that he’d been sick for quite a while.
Sidibé first opened his studio in Bamako in the 1960s. His black-and-white photography captured the essence of Malian youth living in the country’s busy capital. In 2007, the Venice Biennale awarded Sidibé the Golden Lion lifetime achievement award. He was both the first photographer and African to receive this award.
We can’t forget Janet Jackson’s music video for Got ’til It’s Gone(1997) which celebrated his work.
People around the world are remembering his legacy on Twitter.
Many are sharing their favorite photographs.
